  • Registered in Nova Scotia

Matthew Mason attained his Bachelor of Science degree (BS) from Saint Mary’s University with a major in Psychology, graduating with honors in 2012. After exploring various educational and professional pursuits, Matthew sought to return to Psychology by attending and completing the Master of Arts in Counselling (MACP) through Yorkville University, graduating with honors.

Matthew is registered with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists and holds the title of Registered Counseling Therapist – Candidate (RCT-C). Before completing his master’s degree, Matthew conducted his practicum at a non-profit mental health clinic where he provided pro bono services to under-served adults who presented with various problems including trauma, anxiety, and depression. This led him to develop an interest in working with those individuals who have experienced trauma as well as the tools required to do so.

Matthew views all therapy through a person-centered approach where he sees clients as the experts of their lives. Through the development of a strong therapeutic relationship, respect, empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness, a client is free to explore and fulfill their needs and goals. Matthew understands that every client is unique and therefore offers various techniques to assist clients in meeting their needs and goals which are derived from modalities including cognitive processing therapy (CPT), eye movement desensitaization and reprocesing therapy (EMDR), cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Matthew uses a tri-phasic model of treatment when working with trauma which includes safety/stabilizing, trauma processing, and finally reconnection. Matthew continues to broaden his knowledge and in doing so is interested in seeking information related to his client's presenting problems to help further his understanding to provide the best care possible.

Working with Risework, Matthew aims to work with clients to develop mutual goals and provide the necessary support to help clients cope and recover during a difficult time in their lives. In his free time, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family and friends, camping, hiking, reading, listening to music, weightlifting, playing video games, and board games.
